Top cop gets human rights panel notice

Taking suo motu cognizance of media reports over a woman’s gang-rape in a bus here, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued notice to the union home secretary and Delhi Police commissioner, a statement said on Tuesday.

Terming the incident as ‘grave violation of human rights’, the commission in its notice raised the issue of ‘declining public confidence in the law and order machinery’. It also talked about ‘ensuring the safety of women as a number of such incidents have been reported in the national capital in the recent past’. ‘The two respondents have been asked to submit a report within two weeks,’ said the statement.


DEMAND FOR MORE PCR VANS

New Delhi: Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar on Tuesday asked the home ministry to increase the number of police patrolling vehicles to increase police effectiveness in the capital.

Kumar said he had asked Home Secretary R K Singh to provide Delhi Police with 370 more Police Control Room (PCR) vans. ‘I also submitted a proposal to replace non-functional PCR vans,’ said Kumar.
