To rein in prices of onions & potatoes, more mobile vans and 288 fair price shops identified

Delhi government on Monday stepped up its efforts to rein in prices of onion and potatoes in the city by deciding to sell these vegetables from more fair price shops and mobile vans, and also roping in retail major SAFAL to sell them on no-profit-no-loss basis.

The decision was taken in a high level meeting chaired by principal secretary (Finance) M M Kutty. ‘The government has identified 288 fair price shops in the city and more are being identified to sell these vegetables on whole sale rates,’ said spokesperson of Delhi government. Onions and potatoes at wholesale prices will be made available for this intervention by Delhi Agricultural Marketing Board.
‘These market intervention methods to control prices of essential commodities particularily onion and potatoes will continue till August,’ said S S Yadav, principal secretary of Food and Civil Supplies department. In the meeting the SAFAL representative assured the government to sell onions and potatoes on ‘No Profit – No Loss’ basis for the next three months at 380 SAFAL outlets in Delhi.
The representative of National Co-operative Federation of India (NFFC) also assured to run three mobile vans and shops at five locations for sale of pnions and potatoes.

The government has also decided to launch awareness campaigns to make the people conscious about current market rates so that they do not fall victim of black marketers and hoarders.
Currently, these commodities are being sold at 70 government premises at the rate of Rs 22 per kg.This is in addition to the 70 mobile vans which are  in operation and cover more than 250 locations every day. Mobile vans are also selling these commodities at Rs.22 per kg. All the HODs were directed to provide suitable space and necessary manpower for this purpose.
