TN govt launches Rs 20/kg rice

As part of its price control measures, the Tamil Nadu government today launched a scheme offering one kg of rice for Rs 20 in stores owned by it.

Chief minister J Jayalalithaa unveiled the scheme here, keeping in with an announcement made in the assembly last week.

Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation has procured one lakh tonnes of rice in the backdrop of decreased yield of paddy due to deficient rainfall in southwest and northeast monsoons, an official release here said.

The rice will be sold through government-run Amudam stores, cooperative retail shops and other special outlets to be opened soon, it said.  Price of rice in the open market has zoomed to over Rs 50 a kg in recent months.  The AIAMDK government is already supplying 20 kg of rice free of cost under Public Distribution System to ration card holders.
