Manoj Sarkar, Trinamool Congress Chatra Parishad leader from Shantipur in Nadia, has been arrested by the police on charges of threatening a teacher at Shantipur College during the governing body election a few days ago. Police have also arrested Sujoy Das, an associate of Sarkar in this connection.

State Education minister Partha Chatterjee had given instruction to the local administration to take action against the accused. On Thursday night, police conducted a raid and arrested the prime accused Sarkar from Shantipur, who had been absconding since the incident had taken place.

The accused, along with some of his associates, created trouble during the governing body elections of the college. It was alleged that the accused threatened a professor on gun point. Following the incident, the college authorities lodged a complaint in the local police station on the basis of which an investigation was initiated.

After verifying CCTV footages of the college, the police came to know that Sarkar had threatened the professor inside the principal’s room. However, there was no evidence that the accused had threatened the professor on gun point.

Meanwhile, the district TMCP leaders suspended Sarkar after he was accused of creating trouble inside the college campus. Some of the college staff members alleged that police did not take any action against the accused till the top brass of Trinamool Congress gave instructions to take do so. Incidentally, it may be mentioned that TMCP president Jaya Dutta had dissolved the students union in the area. The accused was also removed from the post of TMCP president in the district.
