TMC worker shot dead in Bankura

A Trinamool Congress worker was shot dead by some miscreants on late Sunday night, triggering tension at Gangajalghati in Bankura.

Police said that the victim Ganesh Sutradhar was returning home to Paktor village from Lagapara area of Gangajalghati police station. On the way, some miscreants suddenly stopped his bike. In a few moments, one of the accused took out a gun and aimed at Sutradhar.

When he tried to flee the spot, the accused shot him from point blank range. The victim fell on the ground after he was hit by a bullet on his chest. The miscreants shot a few more rounds but they missed the victim.

The miscreants, however, managed to flee the spot immediately after the shooting. After hearing the sound of the gun shot, some locals rushed to the spot to find the victim lying in a pool of blood.

They rushed him to Mejdia power plant hospital; he was later shifted to Bankura Sammilani Medical College and Hospital as his condition deteriorated. The victim later died in the hospital. The locals told the police that the miscreants hurled bombs while fleeing the spot to terrorise the residents. According to preliminary investigation, police suspect that an old rivalry might have led to Sutradhar’s death.

The victim’s family members alleged that some Congress-backed goons might have been involved in the incident. They had been threatening the victim of dire consequences previously. The local Trinamool Congress leaders too alleged that Congress-backed goons committed the crime, so as to weaken the organisation of TMC in the area as the victim was active worker of the organisation and had become instrumental to strengthen the party.

District Congress leaders have denied the allegation and termed it a result of an intra-party quarrel. Police are conducting raids at various places in the district to nab the culprits. Local people were interrogated in this connection. Police are yet to ascertain the motive behind the murder.

Primary investigation suggests that the victim might have been involved in an old rivalry. Police are investigating whether the victim had developed any rivalry with anyone in recent times. A detailed probe has been initiated.
