TMC upapradhan attacked in South 24 Parganas

A gram panchayat upapradhan of Trinamool Congress from South 24 Parganas was badly beaten up by some unidentified goons. The incident took place at Hatpukuria village under Canning police station on Friday night.

The incident triggered tension in the area on Saturday morning as the local residents staged protest.

Police said that the victim, Ayub Ali Seikh, a senior Trinamool Congress leader and an upapradhan of the local panchayat was sitting in the courtyard on Friday night when some miscreants pounced on him. The victim told the police that the goons came on motorcycles. Before he could realise anything, the accused started beating him up. After receiving injuries, the victim fell on the ground.

Local people came to know about the incident and rushed to his rescue. The miscreants had fled the spot by that time.

The local people took the victim to Canning sub-divisional hospital where he has been undergoing treatment.

The doctors in the hospital said that the victim had received severe injuries on various parts of his body.

The district TMC leaders have alleged that local CPI(M) backed goons have led the attack to weaken their party organisation.

According to the Trinamool Congress, the miscreants have targeted the victim as he has been instrumental in strengthening the party organisation in the area. The panchayat was earlier run by the CPI(M) and under the leadership of the Ayub Ali, TMC managed to take over panchayat.

As a result of this, the local CPI(M) leaders were trying to take revenge on him. It has also been alleged that the victim had been receiving threat calls for sometimes.

The district CPI(M) leaders have, however, denied the allegation and termed the incident as a fall out of the internal conflict within Trinamool Congress.

On the basis of the specific complained lodged by the victim the police have started a case and is conducting raids to nab the culprits.
