TMC trade union president shot at

Unidentified miscreants opened fire at the South Dinajpur district president of Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress (INTTUC) when he was returning home late on Sunday night. The incident took place near Bhikharipara at Gangarampur in South Dinajpur.

Police said that the district president Mojiruddin Mondal had a narrow escape as the bullet hit his motorbike.

On Saturday Mondal was busy in campaigning since morning with Satyan Roy, Trinamool Congress leader from Gangarampur Assembly constituency. In evening, he received information that a former panchayat member of CPI(M) had passed away. In a bid to console the family members of the deceased, he went to his house.

He was heading back to his house, when the incident took place. Some miscreants with their faces covered with clothes approached him on the motorbike when he was passing through a deserted area and opened fire. The INTTUC district president accelerated his motorbike and entered a nearby village. Finding him entering the village, the miscreants fled. Later, Mondal lodged a complaint with the Gangarampur Police Station. Police have initiated a probe in this connection and questioned some youth from the area. They are yet to arrest anyone in this connection. Though Mondal remained unhurt, the senior leaders of the party have urged the police to find out the miscreants. The incident led to panic in the area. Local people urged the police to increase vigilance and patrolling at night.
