TMC set to grill Modi govt during Budget Session

Speaking to the media persons, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien said, “We will grill the Modi government because they proved to be a ‘failure’ to fulfill its pre-poll promises like bringing back black money stashed abroad beside other issues.”

The decision to corner the Central government in the Parliament was taken after a two-hour long party meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to chalk out strategies on which issues they will target NDA’s failure to the masses.

It was decided that a booklet would be brought out by the party to counter the opposition campaign against the TMC government in the state. TMC MPs Sugato Bose, Saugata Roy, Debabrata Bandopadhyay, Anupam Hazra and state ministers Amit Mitra, Subrata Mukherjee and Partha Chatterjee would be the members of the committee to bring out the booklet. On the context of over Saradha multi-crore ponzi scam, the party said it will also politically fight the Government over CBI quizzing TMC leaders on the instruction of a section of BJP leaders. “We will strongly take up the issue of bringing in electoral reforms. On the CBI interrogation of TMC leaders and whether it is CBI
or anything else need to be explored through a politically fight,” Derek said.

On November 19, Mamata called for an ‘Electoral Reform (ER)’ to prevent corruption and use of ill gotten money during the election campaigns. Then Banerjee stressed that the government of India and the Election Commission (EC) should sit together to work on a ‘model’ on how to go about it for the larger interest of the country.

TMC has been demanding electoral reforms since 1994-95 and they will raise the demand in Parliament. It was learnt that party MPs Saugata Roy and Derek were assigned with the job to take the initiatives further to press for electoral reforms. TMC general secretary Partha Chatterjee alleged that BJP, which did not have majority in Rajya Sabha, and therefore they are intentionally arresting TMC MPs on various pretexts.

“A TMC delegation would meet RS chairman and Vice-President Hamid Ansari on this issue,” he added. Another senior party leader Subrata Mukherjee said, “We are ready to accept the challenge of BJP. We emerged victorious under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee in the past too and in future people will show their faith in us. BJP is involved in ‘communal provocation’ in the name of religious conversion. Such act in Bengal will not be tolerated.”
