TMC leaders hold meeting with municipal chairpersons

Senior TMC leaders, Sovan Chatterjee, Mayor and state Fire and Emergency Services minister and Firhad Hakim, state Urban Development minister held meetings with the heads of different municipalities and corporation. TMC has 128 municipalities under its control.

It may be mentioned that party supremo Mamata Banerjee has sent a clear message to party leaders that they should work sincerely and should not be complacent about party’s Assembly election success.

“Do not sit idle thinking that panchayat election is two years away. Work seriously and keep your cell phones on between 10 am and 11pm so that the people can reach you with their grievances”, said told party leaders at a meeting held recently.

Banerjee is also eager to know why party candidates in many constituencies could not do well in various wards under the jurisdiction of municipalities and corporation. To take an example, Sujit Bose, who was elected from Salt Lake had lost in most of the wards in Salt Lake.

Manish Gupta had lost in all the wards under Kolkata Municipal Corporation in JadavpurChatterjee told the chairmen of different municipalities that they would have to make intense contact with people and listen to their grievances.

He made it crystal clear that the party would not tolerate any infighting or anti party activities and stern action would be taken against those flouting party’s norms.” Be careful and remember you are being watched constantly. Do not do anything that lowers the image and prestige of the party,” he maintained.

“Do self-analysis and iron out the errors. Arrogance has no place in administration and you should behave politely with the people,” he observed. The Trinamool Congress leadership on Saturday asked chairpersons of all TMC-controlled municipalities and municipal corporations to remove fake beneficiaries from the list of BPL card holders.

“We have told the municipalities to speed up developmental work. Every three months we will hold such meetings. The list of BPL card holders in their respective areas should be done properly. Those who are the genuine cases should be the real beneficiaries. In areas where drinking water is a problem, it should be solved immediately,” Firhad Hakim said.

Hakim also urged the chairpersons to take steps to make people aware of the programmes taken up by the state government for their benefit. “We will have to inform people about the steps taken up by the state government for the benefit of people. We have carried out extensive development work in the past five years. But the people will have to be informed about them.”

There will be election in 14 municipalities in 2017 followed by panchayat election in 2018.Banerjee does not want to leave any stone unturned and has asked the leadership to pull up their socks.

As the Left Front’s mass base is fast eroding, there is a possibility of BJP gaining ground and might put up an Opposition in 2018 panchayat election. The Lok Sabha election will be held in 2019 followed by KMC election in 2020 and Assembly election in 2021.

TMC has geared up to strengthen the organisation and take lessons from the errors of the past.
