TMC leader shot dead in Nadia

A Trinamool Congress leader was shot dead at Gangnapur near Ranaghat in Nadia on late Tuesday night.

Police said that the victim, 38-year-old Sumangal Biswas was the third Trinamool Congress leader in the area to be killed in the last two years. The district leaders of the party are looking into the matter.

Police came to know after preliminary investigation that Sumangal went to attend a meeting on Tuesday evening. He went to meet some of his friends after the meeting.

He was supposed to have his dinner on Tuesday night at the place where he was passing his leisure time with some of his friends.

Suddenly some unidentified miscreants came to the place on a motorbike. Their faces were covered with pieces of clothes. All of them were carrying fire arms. They entered the room where Sumangal was sitting and fired at him from point blank range.

The miscreants threatened the victim’s friends not to chase them or else they would also be killed. Thus, the victim’s friends didn’t chase the miscreants and they easily managed to flee.

They took Sumangal to hospital where he was declared brought dead. Police initiated a probe, but are yet to arrest anyone in this connection.

The police are yet to ascertain the exact reason behind the murder, but suspect that old rivalry had led to the crime.

The police collected samples from the spot and questioned the friends of the victim. They gave description of the miscreants. Though the faces of the accused were covered with clothes, the police asked the victim’s friends to tell colour of the miscreants’ clothes, their height and complexion. Police conducted raids at different hideouts, but the miscreants had managed to flee. Police also spoke to the victim’s family members.

A police officer said that this is the murder of third Trinamool Congress leader in the area.

The Trinamool Congress upapradhan of Debgram panchayat Arun Shikdar was killed a few months ago. Sumangal was known to be one of the close persons of the upapradhan. In 2014, another Trinamool Congress leader Tapas Majumder was killed in the area.
