TMC leader shot at in Hooghly, 4 arrested

Four persons were arrested and four were detained on charges of attempting to murder the matshya karmadhakshya of Hooghly Zilla Parishad inside a party office of Trinamool Congress at Chanditala in Hooghly. The incident took place on Monday night.

The victim, Afsar Hussain, was admitted to SSKM Hospital with severe injuries and is undergoing necessary treatment.

Police said after preliminary investigation that armed miscreants reached the place on four motorbikes. All of them had their faces covered with pieces of clothes. They went inside the party office at Bhagabatipur in Chanditala when the victim was busy in a meeting with other leaders and workers of the party.

Before anyone could have understood anything, the miscreants held Afsar by his collar and dragged him to the middle of the room. They started stabbing him on his shoulders. In a bid to ensure his death, the miscreants also shot at him.

Others in the party office had somehow managed to flee when the miscreants continued stabbing the karmadhakshya. Realising that the people were approaching towards the party office, the miscreants started hurling bombs. In a bid to save themselves, people ran in search of a safe place. In the meantime, the miscreants managed to flee the spot.

After around 10 minutes, the people went inside the party office and found him lying in a pool of blood. They informed the police and took him to Chanditala Rural Hospital. His condition had, however, deteriorated and he was shifted to SSKM Hospital.

A large contingent of police went to the spot to avoid any further deterioration of the situation. Hussain, later, in SSKM Hospital told the names of the people whom he suspected to be involved in the incident. The police also spoke to the people who were inside the party office when the incident took place and later, arrested four persons Oidul Mallick, Rajib Mallick, Jahir Mallick and Masher Mallick. Four others were also detained in this connection.

Though the police have already come to know names of the person who were behind the attack, they interrogated the four arrested youth to get their version.
