TMC leader in South Dinajpur found murdered

A Trinamool Congress activist was murdered by some miscreants on Sunday evening. The incident occurred at Gangarampur area of South Dinajpur district, triggering tension in the locality.

Some local residents on Monday night spotted the body of the victim, Safiuddin Mia, a well-known leader in the area. After being informed, the police reached the spot to recover the body and sent it for the post-mortem examination.

On the basis of the complaint lodged by the family members of the victim, the police have arrested one person for his alleged involvement in the murder.

Police said that the victim on Sunday had joined a picnic with some of his associates. He had gone missing while returning home from the picnic on Sunday evening.

Police suspect that the accused(s) abducted the victim while on his way to home and took to an abandoned place, where he was later stabbed with a sharp weapon.

Many injury marks were found on various parts of Safiuddin’s body. Police are yet to ascertain the reason for the murder.

The district Trinamool Congress leaders have alleged that some CPI(M) backed miscreants could have committed the crime to take revenge as the victim was instrumental behind strengthening party’s organisation in the area.

CPI(M) leaders in the district, however, denied the allegation and termed the murder to be a result of internal feud within the TMC.

According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that an old rivalry could have led to the murder of Safiuddin. Police are interrogating the accused and found out names of some other persons who might have been involved in the incident.

On the basis of the interrogation, police are conducting raids to nab other culprits. Investigating officers are also interrogating the persons who had accompanied Safiuddin on Sunday’s picnic as they could provide some vital information regarding the incident.
