TMC Councillor held for suicide abetment
A Trinamool Congress councillor from Rajpur Sonarpur municipality was on Wednesday arrested on the charges of abetment to suicide of a businessman in South 24-Parganas. The local residents had put up demonstration with the dead body at ward number 32 under the municipal areas late Tuesday night. A huge contingent of police had rushed the spot to bring the situation under control.
It was alleged that Ananta Roy the councillor of Ward 32 under Rajpur Sonarpur municipality had abated a local resident Biswajit Roy to commit suicide. Roy took a loan of Rs 61,000 from one Prashanta Panja, another businessman from Howrah but Roy had failed to repay the loans in last three months. Few days ago the councillor Ananta Roy had asked Biswajit to appear in a local club.
After the victim had gone to the local club, the accused asked him to repay the loan within three months. The accused councillor also threatened him saying that his house would be sold to repay the money to Panja if the victim fails to pay Rs 20,000 every month.
Following this incident the victim was under tremendous mental pressure. His family members told the police that he was suffering from mental depression ever since he had been threatened by the local councillor to pay the dues. On Tuesday night, the victim committed suicide inside his room. His family members came to know about the incident late in the night. After being informed the local residents also rushed to the victim’s house. The angry mob put up demonstration on the road when the police reached the spot. The demonstration was lifted after the senior police officers assured the victim’s family members that the action would be taken against the accused.
After starting an investigation into the incident the police have arrested the councillor. In the course of investigation, police have also arrested Panja who lent the amount to the victim. The victim’s family members alleged that Panja had also threatened him with dire consequences.
