Tiger mauls man in Sundarbans

Hamid Ali Seikh (32), a fisherman was killed in a tiger attack after he went to Chulkati jungle of Sundarbans.

A pall of gloom descended on the family members of the victim at Kultali of South 24 Parganas.
It was learnt that the victim used to go to different jungles in order to catch fishes in the rivers flowing through the forest. On Wednesday he had gone to Chulkati jungle to catch fish.

While Seikh was engrossed in his job, a tiger came out of the jungle, swam across the river and attacked him from behind.

The victim had fallen in the water. Others with him attacked the tiger with weapons and the tiger fled.

Seikh was rescued by some locals from the water in a near fatal condition. They immediately took him to a nearby hospital, but he died on the way.

It was learnt that the victim had taken the permission of the forest department before going to the forest to collect fishes and crabs.

The local residents said that they had no option other than venturing into the forest for livelihood.

They also said that they would not go to the forest if there had been an alternative income for them.
