Three women of same family charred to death in Nadia district

Three women of the same family were charred to death after one of them had set herself on fire following a dispute in their family at Shaktinagar in Nadia in the wee hours on Wednesday. Police said that Rakhi Ghosh got married to the youngest son of the Ghosh family a year ago. But there had been problems in the family over various issues on a regular basis.

On Tuesday night too there was an altercation between Rakhi and other members of the family. Her mother came to stay with her and to settle the problem. But the situation turned worse when the attempt of her mother to settle the dispute had failed on Tuesday night. They continued quarrelling among themselves till late night. Suddenly, Rakhi went inside the kitchen, poured kerosene and set herself on fire. Finding her committing suicide, her sister-in-laws entered the kitchen to save her.

But Sikha Ghosh and Ranu Ghosh were also caught in the flame. The space in the kitchen was too small as a result they failed to come out of the kitchen. Leaving other members of the house in a helpless situation, all three were charred to death. Three more members of the family were injured when they attempted to save them.

Local people rushed inside the house hearing their cry for help and extinguished the fire. But it took around half an hour to douse the flames and to rescue all six of them.

The neighbours took all six of them to a local hospital where three – Rakhi, Sikha and Ranu – were declared brought dead while three others were admitted with severe burn injuries all over their bodies.

The police went to the spot and took statement of the victim’s family members. The statement of the victim’s mother was also recorded. A police officer said that they have initiated a probe and investigating to find out whether anyone had abetted her to commit suicide.
