Three persons critically injured in Malda shootout

Miscreants shot at three persons, including a pregnant woman, at Malda’s Manikchak on Monday morning. The victims were taken to Malda Medical College and Hospital and are stated to be in a critical situation.

Police said a local farmer Jalal Sheikh was on the way to his farm, when some motorcycle-borne miscreants shot at him twice. Jalal’s nephew Gulzar and daughter Sheuli, who tried to save him, also received bullet wounds. “The miscreants escaped from there soon after the incident. Some local residents rescued the three victims and rushed them to Malda Medical College and Hospital,” said a police officer.

Meanwhile, investigators have learnt that Jalal recently had started a new business venture of export clothes to Bangladesh. However, some local anti-socials were extorting and demanding money from him, which he refused to give. “Sheuli is pregnant. Her condition is really critical. Jalal and Gulzar are also not out of danger,” said a doctor at the Malda Hospital.

In another shootout-related incident, police arrested three men in connection with a shoot-out at North 24 Parganas’ Bongaon. Police said that the victims Sheikh Arshan and Sheikh Amin, two local youth, were sitting in the ground floor of the building when they were attacked by the bike-borne goons, who shot at them three times.

Police said the arrested accused were actively involved in the shoot-out and had fled the area after the incident a week ago. A police team arrested the accused from a hideout at Rajarhat. “Those accused will be produced before court,” said a police officer.
