Three killed in road accident in Malda

Three people were killed when the Raigang -bound truck from Malda rammed into another truck from behind which was standing by the roadside on NH-34 in Malda on Monday.

Police said that the victims were labourers who were travelling on the truck which was hit by the other truck from behind. Local people rushed the injured to the hospital where they were declared brought dead. Police have seized the two vehicles but the drivers of both the trucks have fled from the spot after the accident.

Following the accident, traffic on the NH-34 was thrown out of gear for sometime in the morning. Many vehicles were stranded. Local people also staged a protest against the reckless driving of the trucks. They alleged that the trucks plying through the areas often flout traffic norms and run at a top speed. Also, Police do not crack down on the speeding vehicles. The demonstration was lifted after police intervention.

 According to the preliminary investigation police suspect that the driver of the truck might have fallen asleep and lost the control and at the last moment he applied the brake and managed to save him.
