Three held for illegal construction in New Town

Police arrested three persons on the charge of illegal construction at New Town on Saturday.

On the basis complaint lodged by West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (WBHIDCO), the police arrested three persons from the spot.

However, the WBHIDCO officers were allegedly beaten up by the accused persons at the spot. The officers then called up the police there.

“Three accused, Ramesh Bor, Kayum Ali and Rustam Ali were arrested from the spot. They were involved in local syndicate trade,” said a police officer.

“The accused were trying to set up an illegal construction near the Owl Crossing at New Town. The land was owned by WBHIDCO. The officers soon reached the spot to stop the construction. But they were attacked by those people. Without wasting any time, the officers called up the cops,” the officer added.

It should be recalled that police earlier arrested many persons from New Town on the charges of running syndicate rackets. Those syndicate members used to threaten the real estate traders in New Town-Rajarhat.

“We’ve arrested at least 50 syndicate members from New Town-Rajarhat since last six months. We are still continuing the raid,” a police officer said.

A few months back, a retired judge of Calcutta High Court called up the commissioner of Bidhannagar City Police to complain against a syndicate leader. Some syndicate leaders was dumping construction materials in front of his house without any prior permission.

In another case, a syndicate member at Baligori area in Newtown was arrested by Bidhannagar Police for allegedly extorting a construction conglomerate. Laskar, who is known to be close to a local MLA, was arrested from Laskarhati area. The accused, who was a local syndicate member, created a ruckus at the TCS office in 2014.
