Three held, 11 injured in group clash at Basanti
Eleven persons were injured, in a clash between two groups at South 24 Parganas Basanti area late Monday night. Police said the two factions clashed over domination of a specific area.
Police learnt that two groups of people fought each other which led to heavy injuries to the local residents.
Police said, Enamul Sheikh, a local resident was passing the road when a splinter of a bomb hit him on his back. The man was injured and blood oozed out from his back. He was taken to a rural health centre.
The doctors at the health centre advised his relatives to shift him to Kolkata’s NRS Medical College and Hospital. He has undergone a surgery there.
Police also said that two ever contesting groups of truck drivers – Amanulla Laskar and Abdul Mannan Gazi, fought each other there. Two groups started hurling crude bombs at each other. Enamul, a local shop keeper was crossing the road when the splinter hit him. “The group of Laskar and Gazi fought over the area domination. We arrested three persons in connection with the case. The other accused will also be arrested soon,” said a police officer.
It will be recalled that the same groups clashed a few months ago as well. Police force, accompanied by Rapid Action Force (RAF) reached the spot to control the situation. The police arrested 20 people from the spot then, who belonged to both the camps.
The reason of the fight was probably area domination. “Two groups were preparing for the fight. The people of the area were also tensed over the possible fight. The streets were vacant, the windows and doors were shut in most of the houses before the fight broke out,” said a police officer.
Meanwhile, police recovered empty cartridges from the areas where the fight broke out.
