Three arrested in Burdwan university incident, later get bail

The arrest came after state education minister Partha Chatterjee said that unbiased, stringent action should be taken in this connection.

Police said president of Sikhsha Bandhu Samity Sitaram Mukhopadhyay, Angshuman Goswami and Mangal Roy were arrested on Tuesday morning. They were later released on bail after being produced before the Burdwan Court. It may be mentioned that Mukhodpashyay is the son of the prime accused of the killing of the members of Sain family in 1970.

The students who were demonstrating under the banner of Hok Pratirodh had lodged a complaint against three persons alleging that they were present when the students were attacked. Police had initiated a case in this connection under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. It is learnt that all three of them told the police that they had gone to the spot to bring the situation under control.

It may be mentioned that the police had earlier arrested two others - Sheikh Naseem Ahmed and Sheikh Feroz - on charges of damaging property inside the university campus on February 23. Police were also involved to bring the situation under control when SFI students were protesting against errors in examination results. Later, the students started staging demonstrations against the involvement of the police.
