Three arrested for vandalising church in Vikaspuri

The accused have been identified as Narender Singh (33), Ravinder Pal Singh Gill (25), and Harpreet Singh Dhanjal (28). They are neighbours in Sant Garh area of west Delhi’s New Tilak Nagar.

“The three men vandalised the church after consuming alcohol to celebrate Lohri festival,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Pushpendra Kumar.

A probe was initiated after a PCR?call was received at Vikaspuri regarding the vandalism in the wee hours of Wednesday. The newly installed CCTV cameras outside the church proved to be of great help in the investigation.

They were installed under a scheme by Delhi Police. The footage revealed a man arriving outside the grotto of the church on a scooter and broke the glass-frame with his fist at 4.19 am. He later returned on his scooter with another man, who arrived there on a motorcycle and then allegedly toppled a statue.

Due to the gravity of the incident, special teams under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police (Vikaspuri) Omwati Malik conducted search drills in Sant Garh, Tilak Vihar, Shahpura, Chander Vihar and Nihal Vihar. As many as 100 people were interrogated with the help of Delhi Police’s ‘Eyes and Ears Scheme’.

On the basis of secret inputs and match of identity with the help of CCTV camera footage, police identified the men as Narender, Ravinder and Harpreet.

Narender works as an aluminum fabricator, Ravinder is an unemployed Delhi University graduate and Harpreet works as an air-conditioner mechanic operating from home.

Meanwhile, Delhi Archbishop Anil JT Couto said: “I am glad that the police have nabbed the culprits and are investigating them as to know the motive behind the act of vandalism. I hope that the police would soon find the culprits involved in other attacks on churches in Delhi. We also hope and pray such incidents do not occur again”. Fr. Savarimuthu Sankar, spokesperson of Delhi Catholic Archdiocese, too praised the role of Delhi Police in bringing the accused to justice.
