Threatened couple seeks top cop’s aid

A Delhi-based couple, who got married against their families’ wishes, has approached Delhi police commissioner BK Gupta for security after receiving threatening calls from their family members. The couple, Muslim woman and Hindu man, alleged they had to knock on Gupta’s door after police showed reluctance in providing them security.

They claim 19-year-old Sameera Anjum alias Manisha had to leave her studies midway while 21-year-old Manish Singh is not able to get job in any part of Delhi due to the interference of Sameera’s family members.

. They even called Manish’s father and said they would harm him if he was seen in their area, the couple claimed.

Sameera and Manish met in 2010 in Shaheed Bhagat Singh College of Delhi University through a common friend. As they belonged to different religions, their family members did not approve of their marriage. They, however, got married in Arya Samaj Mandir under the Hindu Marriage act on 2 April 2012.

Then Sameera left her parents’ house in Devli Park and started staying with Manish. But on 17 April, Manish received a call from a mobile, and the caller threatened him of dire consequences.

When the calls became more frequent, the couple approached police at Neb Sarai police station.

‘They carried out an investigation but my father, Mohammad Rafiq, influenced them,’ said Sameera. She said she went to her parents’ house once after the marriage, where they tried to pressurise her to part ways with Manish. When she refused, they threatened her as well.

‘After returning, we took shelter somewhere else in Delhi. But my father and relatives are still following us,’ claimed Sameera.

On 27 April, they approached the Fatehpur Beri police station and lodged another complaint.

‘We have complained to Assistant Commissioner of Police, Deputy Commissioner of police and even Police Commissioner of Delhi, seeking security and immediate action in the case. But so far, nothing has been done,’ said Manish.

Sameera’s father works as power contractor and is said to have a stronghold in their area, while Manish’s father is an employee in BSES.
