Thousands throng the streets for Mamata’s Howrah rally

Thousands of people following the footsteps of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee in Sunday’s rally in Howrah brought back the memories of the procession held at the same place ahead of 2011 Assembly elections.

Banerjee marched from Shalimar to Pilkhana. The 10 km procession took around 2 hours to reach its destination. The rally started at around 4 pm and ended at 6 pm.

After the rally ended, Banerjee urged people to vote in favour of Trinamool Congress candidates and not to give a single vote to CPI(M), Congress and BJP.

The rally mainly passed through three Assembly Constituencies – South Howrah, Central Howrah and North Howrah. Trinamool Congress candidates from these three constituencies Braja Mohan Majumdar, Arup Roy and Lakshmi Ratan Shukla were present in the rally and marched beside Banerjee.

Candidates from Bally Assembly constituency Vaishali Dalmiya, Shibpur Asssembly constituency Jatu Lahiri and other senior leaders of the district attended the rally.

The party supporters had started gathering from 2 pm and the rally started as soon as Banerjee reached the venue. The place was flooded with people and more people joined the procession when it started marching towards Pilkhana.

Mahesh Ghosh, a Trinamool Congress supporter, said that people will never forget the rally that had taken place from Shalimar to Salkia before 2011 Assembly elections for the footfall. People from nooks and corners of the urban part of the district had attended the rally. “Today’s rally was the repetition of the same. Many common people have cancelled all their work to be a part of the rally headed by our favourite Didi,” he said adding that today’s (Sunday) turnout once more proved that the party works round the year for the benefit of the common people.

Thousands of women supporters of the party were found taking part in the procession and sought slogans to urge people to cast their votes in the favour of Trinamool Congress.

People who were standing along the road threw flowers at Banerjee and congratulated her. Verandahs and windows of all the houses on the roads through which the rally passed were filled with people. The residents were waiting since afternoon to have a look of Banerjee. The people cheered as soon as they saw Banerjee.

The poll in Howrah is on April 25 and candidates had started campaigning soon after the candidates list was announced by Banerjee. But each and every party worker and common people had been waiting for the rally headed by Banerjee.
