This 15 Aug, Delhi to be free of kerosene

Come 15 August, the pride of being the country’s first kerosene-free city goes to Delhi with the city government finalising a programme on Wednesday under which 3.56 lakh poor families would be provided LPG connection.

The government would provide each of the 3,56,395 families, which are getting subsidised kerosene, a filled LPG cylinder, regulator, an ISI-marked gas stove having two burners and a rubber tube. The scheme, which would be formally launched on 15 August, was first conceived as subsidised kerosene often does not reach the beneficiaries.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, while presenting the annual budget in the assembly on 28 May, had announced the scheme and the cabinet finalised the nitty-gritty on Wednesday.

Dikshit had announced a cash subsidy of Rs 2,000 to each of the beneficiary families to buy the cylinder, regulator and gas stove. However, the cabinet decided to provide the cylinder, regulator and gas stove directly. All families covered under BPL and Antyodaya Anna Yojna [AAY], besides those residing in jhuggi jhopri colonies, would come under the scheme. All the BPL and AAY families are presently eligible to get 12.5 litres of kerosene every month at Rs 14.83 per litre against the market rate of Rs 27 to Rs 30. Food and Civil Supplies minister Harun Yusuf said the scheme would initially cost Rs 85 crore of which Rs 22 crore would be provided by the Centre.

Currently, Food and Civil Supplies department distribute around 4,400 litres of kerosene, a major quantity of which find their way to black market. Officials said the Food and Civil Supplies department has been told to set up a separate cell to implement the programme.

The department has also been authorised to negotiate with oil companies on the price of ISI gas stoves.
