Thief tries to lift phone from man’s pocket, gets caught and thrashed by locals

Local residents beat up a thief at Birdhum’s Rampurhat after he was caught lifting a mobile phone from a person’s pocket.

Hasibul Shekh, a 25-year-old youth was beaten up brutally by the angry mob. Some local residents called up the police to rescue the man. The police officers dragged the man away from the mob. He was taken to a police station.

Later, police admitted him to a local hospital. Doctor said that the condition of the man is really critical. “We’ve started an investigation. A thief was trying to lift the mobile phone from that person. But he could not do it. He was caught and beaten up there,’ said a police officer.

However, it was not so long ago, when four youth were beaten up at Murshidabad’s Beldanga after they protested against extortionists. Those extortionists blamed them as goat thieves and started to beat them there.

Those youth were brutally beaten up before the police team reached there to rescue those four youth. The officers tried to shift those youth to a different location, but failed to tame the public rage. The extortionists managed to convince the public that they were goat thieves and they should not be spared. Police later arrested those extortionists.

It will also be recalled a member of a local club allegedly beat up policemen who requested them to stop loud speakers at a night party just two week ago at Jalpaiguri. The incident took place at Jalpaiguri’s Rajgunge area, where the resident complained with the local police, about the night party. The police went to the spot and requested the club members to stop loudspeaker, but they did not budge on it.

However, the mob fury followed by beating innocent persons brutally has been a common incident in many districts. The Bengal police learnt that most of those incidents happened at Malda, Murshidabad and some districts in North Bengal.
