Ten undertrial prisoners escape from police van in Allahabad

In a daring incident ten undertrial prisoners escaped from a police van in broad daylight when they were being taken to court from Naini Central jail in Allahabad on Monday.

State additional director general of police (law and order) Arun Kumar said in Lucknow that prima facie it was found that the laxity of the policemen was the reason for the incident. ‘The incident came to light when the police van reached the court and it was found empty. The metal doors were found unlocked,’ he told reporters.

‘Initial reports suggest that policemen were not in the rear of the van when the prisoners were being taken from prison to court for hearing,’ he said, adding that  eight policemen, including a  sub-inspector were engaged for escorting the undertrials but four policemen did not turn up. The van was also not locked hence the undertrials fled on way to the court.’

He said that ten police teams have been constituted to arrest the escaped undertrials and action would be taken against the security personnel, who were escorting these undertrials.
