Teacher immolates self inside school premises in in North 24 Parganas

A school teacher committed suicide by setting herself on fire inside the school premises on Monday morning. The incident occurred at North 24 Parganas’ Habra while classes were going on.

Police said Soma Jana (46), a mother of two, had reportedly been suffering from mental depression. “She was reportedly suffering from depression. Her husband Ratan Jana told us about her illness. Soma was quite disturbed and used to often quarrel with her family members,” said a police officer.

However, Arati Dey, a sister of the deceased, alleged that Soma could not tolerate her husband’s nuisance, who she claimed to be a drunkard. “Arati alleged that Soma’s husband used to make a ruckus in the house time and again. He was requested to stop drinking, but he paid no heed,” said the officer.

“But somebody from Soma’s house needs to lodge a complaint against the husband. Otherwise, we cannot start an investigation. We have only initiated an unnatural death case,” the officer added. Meanwhile, the school was evacuated soon after the incident. There were only a few students who attended school on Monday. Those children were evacuated immediately. Police took the body of the victim to Barasat District Hospital for autopsy.

In another incident, a 42-year-old woman Mangala Das received burn injuries inside her kitchen at Behala’s Shree Colony on Monday morning. Her husband Swapan Das and son Suman Das also received burn injuries while rescuing her.
