Tea garden worker dies

Lalu Nayak, a tea garden worker died in his quarters on Thursday night. With his death the total number of death of tea garden worker has reached 76 in the past six months.

It was learnt that Nayak had been suffering from disease for quite some time. He used to work in a tea garden situated in Dooars.

It may be mentioned that Mamata Banerjee during her election campaign had several times criticised the centre for not taking action against the owners of tea gardens. The owners often close the gardens without any rhyme or reason forcing the workers to face abject poverty. The living condition of their quarters is deplorable. There is no electricity as the line has been disconnected as the owners do not pay electricity bills. There is crisis of drinking water and there is no one to look after their health and hygiene.

Banerjee said she had set up a corpus worth Rs 100 crore to support the tea garden workers. They were getting Rs 2 a kilogram of rice under Khadyasathi project.

Medical teams are sent to examine their health.
