Jammu and Kashmir police said Umar Fayyaz, a Lieutenant rank Army officer, was kidnapped by terrorists when he went to attend a family function in south Kashmir's Kulgam district.

Jammu and Kashmir had witnessed violence during the April 9 bypoll to the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat in which eight people lost their lives in more than 200 incidents.

The bypoll was necessitated following the resignation of Mehbooba Mufti in July last when she became the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

A massive manhunt was launched to trace the militants.
