'Sweet' car thieves arrested

Two auto thieves who gave laddoos laced with sedatives and stole cars were caught by the Noida police.

They have also recovered half a dozen cars, 50 pills of sedatives from their possession.

The accused, both in their mid-30s, have been identified as Ravi Kumar, a resident of Uttam Nagar in Delhi and Guddu, a resident of district JP Nagar in Uttar Pradesh. The two were active in Noida for the last few days.

Recently, they stole an Indigo car from a cab driver from Sector 29 by offering sweet. According to the police, they used banned drug Ativan to lace the sweets and intoxicate drivers.

'On 15 May, they stole the car from a cab driver by giving him laced sweet as religious offering. As soon the driver consumed it, he fainted and the assailants decamped with the car. We activated our informers and managed to locate them near Vinayak hospital where they were arrested. They have confessed to their crime. They used to target lone drivers,' said Praveen Kumar, Senior Superintendent of the Police (SSP).

Police have recovered six vehicles, parked at different public parking lots. Police have also recovered 50 tablets of Ativan. The accused were wanted in various cases and were jailed before.

'The accused, together with a nexus of car dealers sold the stolen cars in Nepal, Kolkata, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh. We have sent a police team to each location to get more details,' added Kumar.

Three other accomplices of the accused, Zakir, Sonu and Sarik, are still at large.
