Suspected ISI agent Zafar Khan sent to police custody

A court here on Tuesday remanded Zafar Khan, arrested in the city for allegedly working for Pakistani spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), in police custody till November 29.

Zafar Khan was arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police on Monday after interrogation of his brother Akhtar Khan, who was nabbed by sleuths on Saturday, revealed his complicity.

He was presented before a city court which remanded him in police custody till November 29.
While police have claimed that they have seized several incriminating documents including Pakistani passports from the accused duo, Zafar’s family accused police of framing him. “Police have framed him. He wouldn't have to work as a daily wager if he really was into spying. Forget a Pakistani passport, he doesn’t even have a bank account,” said a family member.

According to police, Akhtar, who used several aliases, gathered intelligence for Pakistan while working as a bartender in Kolkata. He is believed to have lived in Karachi from 1985 before coming to India in 2008. Like Akhtar, Zafar too had a stint in Pakistan before returning to India.
