The choice of prime ministerial candidate of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is still wide open and this has been confirmed in no uncertain terms by the Leader of Opposition, Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday. The BJP leader’s statement has come at a time when a section within the party has been pushing the candidature of Gujarat chief minister Modi for the top post.
‘Whether we will have a prime ministerial face or not and if we decide to have a face, who it will be, these issues will be decided by the BJP Parliamentary Board,’ said Swaraj. The BJP leader added that the choice of the PM candidate will be decided after consulting the NDA partners.
Though Swaraj and BJP president Rajnath Singh may have said the decision will be taken by the parliamentary board on who would lead the alliance for the general elections in 2014, a section within the party advocated that parliamentary board will be a mere formality, as the cadre has been rooting for Modi’s name and it will be difficult for the party to ignore them.
