Suryanelli case: Govt defends Kurien in RS

The government on Tuesday came out to defend Rajya Sabha deputy chairman PJ Kurien, who is under attack in connection with the Suryanelli rape issue. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath said that investigating agencies and even the lawyer who represented the rape survivor in the Supreme Court had said that no case could be made against Kurien.

‘A section of the media and some political members have sought to drag Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Kurien in a rape case. It has emphatically been stated that he has never been accused in the Suryanelli rape case,’ said Nath while making a statement in Rajya Sabha.

The Left, however, was not impressed with the defence given by the government. CPI (M) members staged a walkout, with senior leader Sitaram Yechury saying Kurien should defend himself. Even the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) was of the view that Kurien should quit his post as deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha and only return when the charges are cleared.
