Sunanda was murdered: Police

Millennium Post was the first to report that Delhi police is likely to register an FIR under the charges of murder. On 10 November 2014, the report was published in the paper.

On Tuesday, BS Bassi, Delhi police commissioner confirmed that Sunanda was murdered and she died due to poisoning. “On the basis of the latest post-mortem examination report filed by the Forensic Medicine Department of the AIIMS and the conclusive report submitted by the Sub Divisional Magistrate in connection to the case, it has been concluded that Sunanda was poisoned. Hence, an FIR under the section of murder has been registered at Sarojini Nagar police station,” Bassi said.

He further added that the poison was either administered to her mouth or injected. In the post-mortem examination, it was clearly mentioned that 12 injury marks were found on Sunanda’s body that also includes an injection mark on her hand. “The nature of the poison and how it was entered in her body is still a matter of investigation,” he added.

Millennium Post had also reported that Sunanda could have died due to Polonium poisoning. “The traces of Polonium-210 is rare and highly radioactive isotope. But the lethal dose could be as little as a few milligrams, which could be administrated as a powder or dissolved in liquid/drinks, the report submitted by AIIMS medical board stated. The report was filed by the medical board on 27 September 2014 and was submitted to police on 30 September. On the basis of the report, the SDM carried forward the investigation and submitted the report in early November.

“We donot have labs in India to find the type of poison that caused Sunanda’s death. So the Viscera will be send to the either lab-- United States of America, London or Scotland,” Bassi said.

After registering the FIR, a special team led by DCP (south)--Prem Nath and Additional DCP (south) PS Kushwah has been formed to re-investigate the case. The case will be probed under 174 CrPC treating the death as unnatural.

On 17 January 2014, just two days after Twitter controversy between then Tharoor, a Pakistani columnist Mehr Tarar and Sunanda Pushkar who called Mehr an ISI agent and accused her of trying to create trouble in her marriage.

Sunanda was found dead under mysterious circumstances at Room no 345 in The Leela Palace hotel in south Delhi.
