Summer style simplified

Summer is here and scorching the lives out of all. But does that mean that fashion must take a back seat? Hell no! The main style statements doing the rounds this summer is all about comfort – but it never hurts to look good. It is all about choosing the right colour, the best fabrics and carrying it off with the right attitude.

So while the shorts seem to be the best bet for the season – do keep in mind that you will be stepping out off the AC interiors in to the killer sun and what rays can do to your skin is nothing less than a nightmare.

We spoke to some designers and took their expert suggestions about what to stock in  your wardrobes this summer. Follow their suggestions and the heat won’t get to you and you can still keep looking perfectly in style. Here’s what they picked as ‘must haves’ for your summer wardrobe.

All designers were unanimous about one thing this season – linen. Linen pants, linen shorts and shirts are a must have this season. While bright fresh colours are in vogue, it is best to stick to soothing neutrals this summer. So beiges, whites, off-whites and light pastels are colours you can pick and pair with floral tops, stringy summer camisoles and cotton t-shirts. The idea is to let the skin breathe – so steer right off heavy fabrics that don’t soak the sweat – pick the naturals.

Leena Singh from the designer duo Ashima and Leena suggests light strappy sandals for the season and a make up kit stocked with summer shades for an instant freshening up session for the ladies. Corals, pinks and pastels rule the palette here as well. Singh was particular about crisp white shirts and the thin stripes – very fresh, very summer.

Nida Mahmood recommends a smart waistcoat or a summer jacket and corsages to dress up the girls’ summer wardrobe. Since summer evenings are marginally cooler – it gives you the chance to dress up a regular top in an interesting way. Nida picked the vibrant colours for this season – the neon greens, turquoise, fuchsia and aubergine. Bright colours in satchels, pumps to appropriately colour block – are the best this season. If the men are not too confident of carrying off the big colour swatches on clothes – a smart linen kurta with a neon collar could add an interesting twist to the look. She also picked the old favourite fedora hats for both the sexes.

Anjalee Kapoor of the Anjalee and Arjun Kapoor duo hinted at a big comeback this season – the maxis. Splendid colours, airy fabrics and some nice accessories to pair off with the wedges that are also on topline for most designers this summer. While she called kaftans ‘all time favourites’ she also included short fitted dresses and high-waisted skirts to the summer list for women. Yellow is the big colour of the season says Anjalee. For the men she recommends fitted cotton t-shirts, overshirts and loafers with trendy caps to beat the heat. For evenings jodhpuri pants and bandhgalas can save  men in case of a summer wedding – but sticking to the logic of the season – the fabric must breathe.

Anupamaa Dayal picked tunic dresses for the girls, and denim hot pants. Neons were also on her list and featured in palazzo pants. She also recommends light scarves that can jazz up any outfit. From round the neck to gracing the wrist of the ankle – scarves could add the zing to the outfit without adding to the bulk. Anupamaa suggests hats for the men and nautical stripes. In whites, blues and reds – nautical stripes are big this season.

Gautam Gupta picked the classic white tshirt and the linen jumpsuit for womens’ casual wear this summer. For the evenings, the little black dress is still his favourite with the right amount of bling or colour block. For those willing to experiment a bit in the heat – the animal print dress is quite a stunning alternative. Colourful jeans are also a big thing this season, pick some crazy colours and pair away!

While Anjalee stressed on the deodorant for men, Anupamaa suggested the man bag. The cross body bags that are easy to carry so that their ‘stuff’ don’t end up being dumped in womens’ bags! Keeping the deadly heat in mind – sunglasses are the favourites. Aviators, wayfarers or pick your style – plain dark or tinted, sunglasses are a must have this season.

So, the basics this season are all about colour and comfort. Stock up on the linen – learn to choose the right linen and most importantly  wear what you can carry off, comfortably. For at the end of the day – nothing is more stylish than an attitude that fits with ease and beats the heat.
