Sugata Marjit expresses inability to continue as interim V-C

Marjit has written to the Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi urging him to release him from the post. According to the sources Marjit has also written to the Higher Education Department in this regard.
Marjit had become the interim Vice-Chancellor in July last year after the Suranjan Das’s tenure ended.

During that time Marjit was appointed as the interim V-C for six months later his tenure was extended for another six months. The extended tenure will be ended on 14 July.

Marjit, a well known scholar and researcher took over as the new Vice-Chancellor of the Calcutta University on July 16 as the then Vice Chancellor Suranjan Das took over the post of VC of Jadavpur University. Das left Calcutta University in the midst of a huge controversy over teaching and non-teaching staff members having been allegedly assaulted by some students.

V-C Suranjan Das himself was roughed up and manhandled in the incident. The state government then appointed Marjit as an “interim measure” and till the time a new fulltime Vice Chancellor was appointed.

A senior official of the Higher Education department however said that they are yet to receive any such letter from Marjit in this connection. It was learnt that Marjit in his letter to the Governor Tripathi stated that he wanted to continue his research after July.
