SUCI(C) supporters gherao police station demanding release of arrested men

A large number of SUCI(C) supporters led by a local MLA on Sunday gheraoed Jaynagar police station in South 24-Parganas district demanding unconditional release of seven people who were arrested for allegedly attacking a police team.

The gherao was led by party MLA Tarun Naskar and it was lifted after their demand was dismissed, a police official said. The seven persons, including some SUCI(C) supporters, were arrested for allegedly attacking a police team in which three cops were injured at Manibashtala last night, they said.

The policemen were attacked when they had gone to the area to execute an arrest warrant against one Sujit Sardar for being involved in encroachment on a government land. The MLA alleged that the arrested persons were innocent and that the police damaged several shops, garages and houses during lathicharge last night.
