Sub-inspector killed as dumper rams into police jeep

The incident occurred around 6 am when Chakraborty was stepping into his vehicle at the Madhabpur area in Uluberia. He had gone there to investigate into a road accident in which a vagabond had died.

After inspection of the dead body and its recovery, the police officer was about to step into his car when a dumper on its way to Kolkata hit the car from behind.Chakraborty received severe injuries on his body and was rushed to the Uluberia Hospital. He was later shifted to the SSKM Hospital as his condition deteriorated.

On his arrival at the SSKM Hospital, the doctors pronounced him brought dead.Police have seized the dumper that hit Chakraborty’s car. However, the driver managed to flee from the spot after the accident. Police were looking into all possible angles behind the incident.

They are also investigating whether it was just an accident or if any foul play was involved in Chakraborty’s death. It is, however, not clear how the dumper could have rammed into the police jeep accidently, as it was standing by the side of the road.

Police are conducting raids to nab the driver. The investigating officers were also trying to find out if the driver was in an inebriated state at the time of the accident.

In the course of the investigation, police came to know that the dumper was being driven at a very
high speed when the accident took place. Police also suspect that the accident might have taken place as the driver could not control the vehicle.

Local people alleged that over-speeding of vehicles at some particular stretches on National Highway 6 has become a menace. They also raised their concerns with the local administration, but no concrete action has been taken yet to check the over-speeding vehicles at the concerned places.

It remains to be seen if the police and the authorities will take any measures to check such incidents.
