Students miffed with NET centres confusion

Students appearing for UGC NET exam 2012 were left in a lurch on Sunday morning after they were informed that the centre alloted to them is not conducting the exam.

In a glaring case of mismanagement, students were not informed about the change in centre till they reached their appointed destination.

The case came into light when around 500 students who turned up at the Dwarka Sector 16, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University Centre were told that no exam is going to take place here.

Students got irked by the callousness of the authorities as all their preparations had gone for a toss and the exam will now happen after 6 months in December.

Some policemen also reached the spot.

Students lost their cool after some were found giving the exam in one block. The agitated students barged into the examination hall and tore the question paper. Adding on to the problem, some students also alleged that the question paper has been leaked.

Suneeta, a resident of Safdarjung, said, ‘The moment I reached the examination centre I saw some students going back. I was wondering what is happening. The university people asked me to go to Dwarka Sector 23, Delhi International School. But after reaching there I came to know that no such examination is taking place here.’

‘The exam was supposed to start at 9.20 am. It is noon now. What will we do?’ said an angry student.

According to students, the timing of exam was given on the university’s website but there was no information regarding the centre. They lamented that it took time to reach the newly-allotted centres.

At some centres, students protested against the university administration. The National Educational Testing Bureau of University Grants Commission [UGC] conducts National Eligibility Test [NET] to determine eligibility for lectureship and for award of Junior Research Fellowship [JRF] for Indian nationals in order to ensure minimum standards for the entrants in the teaching profession and research.

UGC conducts NET twice a year, i.e., in the months of June and December. The result of June, UGC-NET is declared generally in the month of October.'
