Student lynching: Gouri Majhi remanded in CID custody

Kaushik, a 22-year-old youth was lynched to death by a mob on mere suspicious of being a thief who stole a buffalo.

Police had initially started its investigations but the CID later took charge following the Chief Minister’s order. 

Kaushik, an ITI and a resident of Mandirbazar in South 24-Parganas was visiting his aunt in Diamond Harbour with his mother when the incident occurred. The name of Tapas Mullick cropped up during the investigation, who was later arrested him from Dutta Pukur in North 24-Parganas few days after the incident.

The investigating officers had visited the spots and talked to the victim’s relatives. Mullick, the accused had initially tried to mislead the CID officials and claimed his innocence.

Mullick told the CID officers that he did not demand Rs 60,000 for the stolen buffalo. The mob demanded money from the victim before lynching him to death.

The victim’s family members demanded strong action against the accused who were involved in such a heinous crime. Family members lodged a police complaint and 10 persons were named in the FIR. In the course of investigation the CID has arrested Gouri. She was remanded in CID custody after being produced before a district court. 

Investigating officers came to know that Gouri was involved in fueling the incident. Police interrogated her to know the names of the other accused involved in the crime. They will question the accused about how the incident took place and would also cross check her statements with that of the other accused who have already been arrested in this connection so far.
