Structure in likeness of Sydney’s Harbour Bridge to come up near Hooghly

The city is will soon boast of a bridge, which will resemble Sydney’s famed Harbour Bridge, thanks to Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).

With help from the state government, KMC will construct the bridge in Kolkata’s Millennium Park, adjacent to the shore of river Hooghly.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a steel ‘through arch bridge’ across Sydney Harbour, which carries rail, vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic between the Sydney central business district (CBD) and the North Shore.

The picturesque beauty of the bridge, harbour, and the Sydney Opera House located nearby forms an iconic image of Sydney. The city becomes a grand spectacle during New Year celebration every year.

The bridge in Kolkata will largely resemble the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and would connect Millennium Park and Chandpal Ghat. The top of the bridge would provide a unique vantage point to marvel at the scenic beauty of river Hooghly.

Visitors who come to spend time at Millennium Park have to cross a railway track of circular rail to enter the park, which often results in accidents. After the bridge is built, visitors would only need to cross the bridge to reach Millennium Park

According to a source at KMC, the project will cost around Rs 5 crore. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee instructed the Corporation to set up the bridge as soon as possible. It will help hundreds of visitors to reach Millennium Park safely.

The source further said that the bridge will be a concrete and steel structure. It will be pegged as one of Kolkata biggest attractions.

Earlier, a miniature replica of London’s Elizabeth Tower clock, also known as Big Ben, was constructed on VIP Road’s Lake Town.
