Strokes of tradition

Sanjhi is an exhibition of New Works in Hand Cut Paper conceptualized and organized by Delhi Crafts Council as a tribute to the craft as well as to the dedicated families in Mathura who continue to practice this craft and have engaged fully in its development. The exhibition will be on from March 24 -28 at The Lodhi Hotel, Lodhi Road in the Capital.

As part of the temple rituals in this region, intricate multicolored rangoli or floor patterns are created with coloured powder using the stencils. Delhi Crafts Council has been involved in sanjhi for more than three decades and has thus ensured that it has moved to a much wider audience and public space.   In recent years, the contributions of designers and other like-minded organizations have also opened up a variety of different applications for this craft.

The exhibition features the different design themes which have been chosen to reflect and echo traditional Sanjhi patterns of stylized trees and mughlai jaalis. In an exciting experiment, Sanjhi has been combined with hand painting in the Pichwai style.
