Stop mining till probes are dealt with: Goa NGO

Terming the steps taken by various authorities on illegal Goa mining an eyewash, a Public Interest Litigation [PIL] on Wednesday urged the SC for direction to the central government to not permit resumption of iron and manganese ore mining in Goa till such time as the findings of the Justice M B Shah Commission of enquiry, which probed illegal mining, have been adequately dealt with. It has also sought direction for restraining trade and transportation of ore already mined.

The petitioner, NGO Goa Foundation, has sought direction for the appointment of an independent authority vested with full powers to take control, supervise and regulate mining operations in Goa and implementation of the recommendations of the Justice M B Shah commission on mining.

The petition says, ‘The full investigation of the Shah Commission of Enquiry into Illegal Mining is yet to be completed but after perusal of report, the present situation indicates widespread unacceptable illegality.

Not a single mine in the State of Goa have been found to be legal or working in legal manner by the Commission which is an unprecedented situation.
