Still can’t believe our Pranabda has become president: Mamata

The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee flagged off his four day trip to Kolkata with a public reception accorded by the West Bengal state Government. This is his maiden trip to the city after he assumed post of President after an election that was plagued by many controversies and political flip-flops, especially by the Trinamool Congress.

The function, held at the Netaji Indoor stadium on Friday, saw Mukherjee and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee showering praises on each other. While Banerjee described the moment as a ‘historic’ one, Mukherjee had a word of praise or two for the Chief Minister. The Governor of Bengal, M K Narayanan, several MPs, MLAs and the Mayor of Kolkata, Sovon Chatterjee, were present on the occasion which saw several folk artists from Bengal participating.

‘It is a protocol to address as President as Sir. But I really don’t know what to say whether President Pranab Mukherjee or Pranabda, as I am habituated. We have two-three decade-long relationship,’ said Banerjee

‘I still can’t believe that our own Pranabda has become president of India. We are very happy. We have very fond memories, sometimes he used to scold us, sometimes he used to advise me, sometimes we both used to quarrel,’ she said.

The president will be attending the diamond jubilee celebrations of IIT Kharagpur on Saturday.
