State Power Minister to hold meeting with officials of Durgapur Project Ltd

State power minister Sovandeb Chatterjee will hold a high level meeting with the senior officials of the Durgapur Project Ltd at Durgapur on Monday to chalk out a comprehensive plan to turn DPL into a profit making organisation.

DPL is a state government owned power utility which has currently been incurring huge losses. It may be mentioned that few days ago, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had instructed the power minister to take necessary steps so that DPL, which has been incurring huge losses over the years can be turned into a profit making body.

Following the instruction of the Chief Minister, a meeting was held in the city in which state finance minister Amit Mitra, power minister Sovandeb Chatterjee, Moloy Ghatak the local MLA and the labour
minister were present along with some senior power department officials in which various issues relating to the financial condition, the procurement and the losses incurred by the organisation was discussed at length.

This is a major initiative taken by the state government to enhance the production of the multi-utility growth propeller. After coming to power in 2011, Mamata Banerjee led government had laid an emphasis in the power sector.

The generation of power in the state has seen a new height in all its divisions of solar, thermal and hydro-electric projects. Even the state power department has started pumped storage power project in various parts of the state.

According to the sources in the power department Monday’s meeting will focus on chalking out a plan on how to improve the production at DPL and will aim to restart the units that had remained un-operational for long time.

The details relating to the financial condition of the DPL and what are the necessary procurements have to be made on order to resume normal functions of the units would be discussed in the meeting.
Six out of eight units at DPL have been lying defunct for a long time. The DPL which was set up in 1961 has been suffering from huge financial loss every year.
