State govt to construct Biswa Bangla mall on East Metropolitan Bypass

The state government has decided to construct a Biswa Bangla Mall on EM Bypass exhibiting wide varieties of handicrafts, Taant Sarees, and other products made by the artisans under various micro and small scale industries.

It was Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee whose effort has brought an international acclaim to Biswa Bangla which has become a brand already. It may be mentioned here that Banerjee has given a great emphasis on MSME sector so that artists and the people involved in various micro and small scale industries can get a platform to promote their goods.

Biswa Bangla, the Chief Minister’s brainchild has become a brand, not only in the national arena but also abroad. Various handicrafts prepared by Bengal artisans have created a market in various countries. This is exactly what Mamata Banerjee has aspired for. Biswa Bangla stalls are being opened in other countries as well. By the virtue of their quality, various handicrafts of Bengal have already attracted the attention of the global market.

Department of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and Textiles has promoted Biswa Bangla Marketing Corporation for the improvement of quality of life of Bengal’s handloom weavers, craftsmen. Biswa Bangla has successfully revived the Bengal’s traditional arts and craft and promoted them at a global level. It may be mentioned that for the first time, Bengal government is preparing an export policy in the MSME sector.

After successfully setting up of Biswa Bangla stalls in various parts of the state and also in Delhi promoting various items, the state government is going to set up a mall on EM Bypass. The proposed mall would come up on 1 acre land owned by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). The Biswa Bangla mall would have world class facilities and infrastructure. The architectural engineers will make its design. Senior KMC officials have already discussed various matters with their counterparts in the MSME department in this regard. A detailed project report will soon be prepared after considering various aspects.

It was learnt that there will be separate stalls for various handicraft, Taant Sarees, various food items and many others would be put on display so that buyer from within the state and outside can have a glimpse of these products while visiting the mall. It is for the first time that such a mall would be constructed exclusively dedicated to handicrafts, textiles and food items. Foreign tourists can also buy these items directly from the stalls.
