Stage set for high drama in East

As administration and BJP leaders prepare their separate venues for the sitting of East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC), the stage is all set for high drama and uproar in the house on Thursday.

'The official venue for the sitting of the House on Thursday is an auditorium, which has been finalised after the consent of mayor and deputy mayor. It is also mentioned in the agenda circulated among corporations for the meeting,' said S S Yadav, Commissioner, EDMC.

'I don't know who is behind the arrangement of tents. It is not the official venue so the corporation will not pay charges incurred due to it. Auditorium is the official venue and we have made all the arrangements there,' added Yadav.

As per the agenda, the meeting is scheduled to start at 2 pm in the auditorium of EDMC Headquarters, Udyog Sadan, in Patparganj. 'We have completed all necessary preparations to hold the meeting in the auditorium,' said Yadav.

This would be the first sitting of EDMC after election of mayor and deputy mayor. But the ruling BJP has expressed it reservations on lack of facilities in the auditorium and have hired someone to prepare a temporary venue in the premises of the headquarters.

'The auditorium is not equipped with the facilities to host the meeting of the House. It lacks microphones and tables, Even the stage is make-shift,' said B B Tyagi, candidate for Leader of the House. His views were echoed by Mahek Singh, candidate for chairman of Standing Committee.

'The arrangements for the election were shameful. In protest of the poor infrastructure, we have decided to hold the meetings in tents,' said Mahek Singh. The BJP councillors are busy arranging the equipment, such as microphones, water-coolers, stage and so on for the venue.

Mayor Dr Annpurna Mishra, however, followed the middle path. 'If the members are not satisfied with arrangements in the auditorium, they may boycott the House. In such a case, meeting will be held in the tent,' said Mishra. Meanwhile, Congress has not showed its cards yet.

Yadav admitted to the lack of facilities in the auditorium but urged the members to cooperate.

'It will take a few months to renovate the auditorium. The first five rows will be reconstructed to put tables and microphones on them. The rest will remain as usual,' said Yadav. The commissioner has engaged an architect to finalise all those things.

He also emphasised that the basic structure of the auditorium will be changed  and it will be rented out on other days. 'The corporation does not want to lose the revenue it could generate from the auditorium,' added Yadav.

According to Delhi State Industrial And Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC), the auditorium fetched around Rs 60 lakh in 2011.
