SSKM on-duty nurse assaulted

A day after some junior doctors had a clash with the relatives of patients following an allegation and counter allegation against each other, trouble broke out at SSKM Hospital on Wednesday after an on-duty nursing staff was beaten up with a shoe by some people due to alleged medical negligence.

The incident triggered tension in the Mackenzie ward of the SSKM Hospital following the death of a patient. Police said that the patient Sankar Sahu was admitted to this ward with critical ailments. The patient’s condition deteriorated after an MRI scan was performed on him.

At that time an on-duty nurse had administered him an injection. The relatives of the patient alleged that after being injected, the condition of the patient deteriorated and eventually led to his death. As the news of the patient’s death spread among his family members, two of them attacked the nursing staff and beat her up with one’s shoes. Another nursing staff in the ward was also beaten up by the patient’s relatives. 

The staff members of the hospital informed the matter to the police post inside the hospital who managed to arrest two accused. Bhaswati Mukherjee, a senior nursing staff at the SSKM Hospital and a member of Nurses’ Unity said, “The nurses at the hospital were feeling insecure following repeated incidents of attacks on the junior doctors and nursing staff. We demand adequate security arrangements inside the hospital premises to prevent any untoward incidents.”

A police picket has been posted at the Mackenzie ward following the incident. The police are also investigating to find out if any other persons were involved in the attack.
