SSKM jr doctors on wildcat strike after assault by patient’s kin

The junior doctors at SSKM hospital on Thursday called a wildcat strike after one of their colleagues was beaten up by the relatives of a patient on Wednesday night. The junior doctors staged a demonstration outside the office of the medical director at 11 pm on Wednesday.

They demanded that security inside the hospital should be beefed up and police should be posted inside the emergency ward. They also demanded that admission of patients in the emergency ward by important people should be stopped immediately.

The trouble began on Wednesday night after a six-year-old boy with respiratory distress and abdominal pain was admitted to the emergency department.

The relatives of the patient who had accompanied him alleged that the doctors made inordinate delay in starting treatment. As a result, the condition of the boy deteriorated. They beat up Abhishek Singh, a doctor. The junior doctors present at the site rescued him.

The junior doctors alleged that it had become a regular feature to assault doctors on one pretext or the other. They demanded that police should be posted inside the emergency department and they should intervene to prevent attacks of the doctors.
