A jawan of the Seema Suraksha Bal shot himself to death at Cooch Behar, where he came to perform duty during the election, on Monday morning.

Police said that the victim Sonu K Thakur was deployed at Jamaldaha High School. On Monday morning at around 6.30 am his colleagues heard a sound of firing and rushed inside the school building and found the victim lying in a pool of blood.

They took him to Jamaldaha Primary Health Care Centre where he was declared brought dead. Doctors told the police that he received two bullets on his body.

The victim, who was a resident of Aligargh in Uttar Pradesh, had been going to different districts for duty during the Assembly elections along with other members of his battalion. The victim was a jawan of battalion 38 of SSB.

The body was sent for an autopsy. Police are, however, yet to ascertain the reason that had forced him to commit suicide. His family members were contacted and the body will be handed over to them.

Police spoke to some of his colleagues and they told the police that they had seen nothing suspicious in Sonu’s behaviour. He spoke normally to everyone even on Monday morning. He also had plans to take leave for some days after the election process in all the states gets over. The policemen also asked his colleagues whether he was found speaking over phone for a long time on Sunday night.
Senior police officers rushed to the spot and had a talk with senior officers of SSB’s battalion in this regard.

It may be mentioned that this is the second incident in the state in which a Central Force jawan shot himself to death while performing duty.

On April 29, a jawan Jasai Hansda committed suicide while performing poll duty at Gosaba in South 24-Parganas. The incident took place when the constable of 505B company was posted at booth number 45 at Battali Mondalpara Shishu Shiksha Kendra.
